5-Day PAINTING RETREAT in CHACALA, MEXICO

Paint and draw for five days in sunny, warm and inspiring Chacala, Mexico!

Paint and draw for five days in sunny, warm and inspiring Chacala, Mexico!

Chacala is just two hours north of Puerto Vallarta (transportation to and from the
airport is provided). Students reside and paint at Casa de Tortugas, a lovely villa surrounded by lush tropical
foliage. Casa de Tortugas has a swimming pool, roof top palapa (open patio) that functions as
our painting studio, a full kitchen, and a hired local cook who prepares our lunches
and dinners in house.
This year we have added two days to allow for a full day to
acclimate before class begins and another full day after to enjoy the beach, local
restaurants, local people, and surroundings on your own.

This five day landscape painting retreat combines sketchbook drawing with landscape
painting. There will be three acrylic paintings made overall, some based on the
sketches made on the beach, at the nearby marina and in town. Fugate will guide
you with specific objectives both in your sketchbook drawings as well as the paintings, capturing the brilliant light, vivid
colors, and spirit of the village and landscape of Chacala.

MATISSE & DIEBENKORN: A Painting Workshop
This workshop celebrates the upcoming exhibition at San Francisco MOMA : Matisse/Diebenkorn.

LOCATION: Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle
DATES: Feb. 18-19 (Sat/Sun) / TIME: 10 AM - 5 PM / CLASS FEE: $240

T.S. Eliot wrote, "A poet cannot help being influenced, therefore he should subject himself to as many influences as possible."

Richard Diebenkorn was inspired and influenced by the paintings of Henri Matisse. This workshop explores the structure of Matisse's compositions, the various qualities of light he created, simplification of form, and use of line. These aspects of Matisse's paintings can be seen in many of Diebenkorn's, as he re-interpreted them in his own voice.
In this class, you will make a figure and a still life painting, one each day. Your paintings will also re-examine Matisse's compositions, as Diebenkorn did, exploring structure, color and line.
Acrylic or Oil paints. Painting experience recommended.

2 Days of Working from a Live Model  

(take one or both days)
Fee: Both days $125 / One day $70
Location: Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, W. Seattle
Time: 10 am - 5 pm each day

ART MARATHONS are weekends dedicated to drawing and/or painting from a live model. You choose what to do, there is no instruction.
Surround yourself with others who are all practicing and experimenting on paper and canvas. Everyone works on their own in a fun and focused atmosphere.
This is a great opportunity to practice drawing/painting for six hours each day. Poses begin at one minute and progress up to two hours. There are two models each day.
Practice at your own pace with materials of your choice.
Snacks provided to keep all happily fueled.

APRIL 29-30:  FIGURE DRAWING:  All About LINE

Location: Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle
Time: 10 am - 5 pm Sat/Sun
Fee: $240

Perhaps the most intimate and direct expression in drawing is Line. Making Lines is a visual language that conveys both emotion and likeness. This class is designed to further your vocabulary in both ways, expressively and visually with a wide variety of lines made with different media.
Fugate will guide you as you make many gestures and longer studied drawings from the live model. Issues covered include: gesture drawing, variety of line, value, shape and color. Materials include charcoal, ink wash, and some soft pastel.
Some drawing experience is recommended.

This ONE DAY workshop is focused on one thing: Keeping your figure drawings loose while making a strong composition.
Learn to keep the vitality and dynamism of gesture drawing alive in two developed figure drawings.
Mixed media will be used, including charcoal, colored ink and some soft pastel.
Figure drawing experience recommended. You will work on 24x36" sized papers.

Each day will focus on artists from Post-Impressionism, Expressionism, and Surrealism, investigating the unique sensibilities and vision of each art movement.  The concepts defining these movements will help direct your plein air paintings toward new ways of looking and responding to your surroundings.

Issues covered include a variety of paint applications, composition choices, and vivid color. 

Energize your powers of observation and spark your imagination with this exciting workshop.  
Oil or acrylic paints. Some painting experience is highly recommended.

SELF-PORTRAIT Drawing & Painting

Countless artists have drawn and painted self-portraits as a regular practice and other just on occasion.

When you want to work from life and a model isn't available, it's easy to set up a mirror and set to work. Self-portraits are more than copying likeness. They're opportunities to express inner thoughts and universal themes on many levels.

This workshop begins on Saturday with drawing from your reflection in a mirror. You'll make several quick sketches and one developed drawing using compressed charcoal and some ink wash. You'll paint on Sunday, utilizing your drawings as a springboard. Issues covered include: expressive line and color, composition, facial structure and proportion. You will also learn a variety of paint applications.

Oil or acrylic paints. Some drawing and painting experience is recommended.

June 21-July 26 :  6-Tuesdays, 11am-2pm / class fee $200

SUMMER SKETCHBOOK

This class meets six consecutive Tuesdays at three different locations: Woodland Park Zoo to draw animals, Volunteer Park Conservatory to draw plants, and two Seattle City Parks (TBA) to draw different landscapes.

You will use mixed-media materials such as: conte crayon, opaque watercolor, water-soluble crayons, and some pastel. ANIMALS, PLANTS and LANDSCAPE are the subjects of this summer's sketchbook class. Each session will focus on particular issues including Line, Space, Texture, Contrast, and Color.

All levels welcomed. Entrance fees are not included.

Draw in sketchbooks from fascinating animals and plants while exploring issues of color, texture, space, line, form, and composition.  It’s a joy to be outside the studio making drawings that challenge and expand drawing skills and the imagination.

The first session is at Woodland Park Zoo and other sessions will be held at Volunteer Park's Conservatory.

Entrance fees are not included.  All levels are welcome.

There are four different models, two each day.  You can paint, draw, sculpt...it's your choice.  Model poses begin with short ones and progress to a sustained pose (2-3 hours) each day.

There's no instruction.  I will be there drawing and painting while timing the models.  Nibbles are provided to keep everyone happily fueled.

GESTURE DRAWING:  Figure Drawings made From the Senses
Workshop Fee: $245 / 10am-5pm each day / Held at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle

Drawing from the Senses means engaging your whole self, utilizing your sense of touch, sound, and sight when drawing quickly from the live model.

Gesture drawing isn't only a visual experience, it requires all of your senses to draw more accurately and sensitively.

Fugate will lead you through a course of  exercises designed to expand the kind of marks you make and to unleash your imagination to discover new ways of making a figure drawing.

This workshop is a great way to break habits, enlarge your visual vocabulary, make dynamic and accurate gesture drawings. Materials include charcoal, drawing ink & soft pastel.
All Levels Welcomed.

What a great way to spend a weekend—Making Art from the live model!

Art Marathons are an excellent opportunity to work at your own pace and experiment with materials.  It's also fun to meet others doing the same thing.  No matter your level, a beginner or very experienced, when the timer starts the pose, we're all in it together.

You can take one or both days. It's an exciting weekend to work from live figure models with a group of fellow artists who are equally focused and enthusiastic about making figurative art.

Pose lengths vary from one-minute gestures to two hour poses.
You can paint, draw, sculpt, make collages—your choice!  I’ll be there, too, making art and timing the models.  No Instruction.

Portrait Painting in the Manner of Max Beckmann
Explore the work and portrait painting techniques of Max Beckmann in this two-day workshop.  Beckmann was a 20th century German painter, printmaker and a teacher who rejected perspective and classical proportion in favor of more expressive and objective art.  His portraits are colorful, with textural brushstrokes and strong black lines that defined the form of the figure.  His concerns for surface texture were inspired by Cezanne and Rembrandt.  You will paint from a live model in the manner of Beckmann, making some short painting sketches and one extended study on canvas.  Some painting experience recommended.  Oil or Acrylic paints.

6 SESSIONS Sketchbook Drawing at the ZOO
Draw in sketchbooks from fascinating animals while exploring issues of color, texture, space, line, form, and composition.  It’s a joy to be outside of the traditional studio investigating drawing concepts
inspired by “models” at the zoo.  Drawing media tools include conté crayon and color washes.  Each lesson begins with a lecture introducing the topic for the day at the zoo café.  Then we travel as a group to draw directly from the animals.  All classes are held at Woodland Park Zoo.  All levels are welcomed.  Zoo entrance fee is not included.
