GESTURE DRAWING: Be Bold, Brave & Quick 
 
Gesture drawing is naturally raw, direct, bold, and exciting!  It is a way of participating fully in the experience—the act—of drawing while you capture a sense of “how the model is,” not what they look like.   You are guided through a plethora of gesture drawings in charcoal and color, aiming to make you a more compassionate observer and enthusiastic participant in your drawings.  The weekend begins in charcoal on Saturday with colored pastel and ink washes added on Sunday.  All levels are welcomed. Some previous experience in figure drawing is recommended but not required.  Drawings are made on 24”x36” paper.

DOUBLE MODEL Art Marathon Weekend!  -No Instruction-
 
This is a special opportunity to work from TWO MODELS posing together for an entire weekend! There’s no instruction—I will be there drawing/painting and timing the models.  Pose lengths vary from short gesture poses up to extended ones (1-2 hrs) .  Both models are fantastic gesture models, collaborators and experienced dancers, making their poses exceedingly inspired and inspiring!  You choose your media.  The models will be surrounded by a colorful  tableau, and a table of snacks will be available to keep all happily fueled for a dynamic weekend of double model compositions.

SKETCHBOOK DRAWING with Mixed Media

Draw in sketchbooks from ever fascinating animals and plants exploring issues including color, texture, space, line, form, and composition.  It’s a joy to be outside of the traditional studio setting, investigating drawing concepts inspired by our models at the zoo and conservatory.  A variety of drawing media will be used beginning with conte crayons and then adding color media including colored pencils, water-soluble crayons, and watercolors.  Classes are held at Woodland Park Zoo and Volunteer Park’s Conservatory.  All levels are welcomed.  Zoo entrance fee not included.

OCT. 20-21:  Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, West Seattle
Class Fee:  $235 /  Time: 10am - 5 pm Sat/Sun
In the manner of VAN GOGH:  Still Life & Self-Portrait Painting 

Practice the genres of Still Life and Self Portrait painting in the manner of Van Gogh.  Van Gogh’s innovations in painting using expressive color, shallow space, and texture greatly influenced painters of his time and continues today.  In this weekend workshop you will investigate these elements of painting and compositional choices painting from a still life on Saturday and Self Portrait painting (using a mirror) on Sunday.  Emotive color, engagement of the psyche, and a celebration of nature are also aspects of Van Gogh’s art that will be discussed and sought after through the weekend of painting.  Some painting experience recommended.  Oil or Acrylic.

APRIL 21 & 22:  Youngstown Cultural Arts Center, West Seattle

DOUBLE MODEL Art Marathon Weekend!  (no instruction)

This is a special opportunity to work from TWO MODELS posing together for an entire weekend!  There is no instruction (I’m there drawing/painting and timing the models, too).  There will be a variety of pose lengths from one minute gestures to longer extended poses.  Both models are fantastic gesture models who are experienced collaborators and dancers, so their poses are destined to be incredibly inspired and inspiring!  You paint, draw, sculpt, make collages...your choice.  The models will be surrounded by a colorful  tableau, and a table of snacks will be available to keep everyone happily fueled to keep up with a dynamic weekend of double model compositions.  (Photo: Student Drawing, P. . 10th Annual Painting Retreat on Guemes Island, near Anacortes
JULY 26-29:  Workshop held on GUEMES ISLAND, WA 
(Thurs/Fri/Sat/Sun 9:30AM – 4:30PM) Class Fee: $375 (does not include lodging or food)
PAINTING THE FIGURE in the LANDSCAPE
 
For four days you will paint from a model among trees, by the water, and in a garden—what a great way to spend an extended summer weekend!  It is also a very special opportunity that’s as fun as it is challenging for all levels of painters. 

Each morning you paint in a different location with the model in a new environment, from the Puget Sound to the NW forest.  In the afternoons you build a painting “from the ground up” over the course of four days.  Practicing the Direct Painting approach, specific compositional and color issues are explored that Barbara presents each morning and afternoon. 

>NEW!  In celebration (and commemoration of) this Ten Year Anniversary for this workshop, Saturday will be a “free paint day” from the model—with no instruction.  The model will be posed in the positions of two canvases already underway giving you time to work out the goals of the painting.  Barbara will be available for questions and/or suggestions that day.  Regular instruction resumes on Sunday.  All Levels Welcomed.  Oil or Acrylic Paint can be used.

SIX SESSIONS SKETCHBOOK: Mixed Media Drawing

Draw in sketchbooks from fascinating animals and plants while exploring issues of color, texture, space, line, form, and composition.  It’s a joy to be outside of the traditional studio investigating drawing concepts inspired by “models” at the zoo and conservatory.  A variety of colored drawing supplies will be used, both wet and dry media.  Classes are held at Woodland Park Zoo and the Volunteer Park Conservatory. 
All levels are welcomed.  Zoo entrance fee is not included.

More (new zoo) Drawings

I worked mostly on colored paper (9x13") with conte crayon, and couple drawings with watercolors.  One pheasant was nearly camoflaged close to my feet (in a free roaming aviary).  I slowly opened my sketchbook, turning pages quietly, and hoped he/she wouldn't mind me looking at them that way for a while.  The bird seemed a little concerned but stayed in their place for a bit--moving out of view after maybe five minutes. Interactions like that, if they can be called interactions, are ones I really love having while drawing at the zoo.  An intimate drawing moment with another being, especially one whose experience of the planet and each other is something we'll never really know.

Alice Neel painted portraits of friends, fellow artists, art collectors and more, with expressive lines and
colors that translated their personalities in an intimate and direct way.  This Portrait workshop explores painting in the manner of Alice Neel’s “brushstrokes and color” to learn more about the use of such expressive and bold lines with vivid color shapes, and thick to thin texture.  Some painting or drawing experience recommended.  Oil or Acrylic paint.  (Image: Alice Neel)

(PAINTING) ART MARATHON —Paint, Draw, Sculpt—it’s your choice.
This is a great opportunity to study from live figure models in extended poses (NO INSTRUCTION).  There will be two poses by two different models.  Both models will pose for three hours each day, repeating their pose from Saturday to Sunday surrounded by a colorful backdrop. And there will be a table full of yummy snacks to keep you happily fueled while making art throughout the weekend.  I will be there painting and timing the models.  Take both days or one.  Come join in an inspiring weekend of art making—painting, drawing, sculpting...it’s your choice. Mixed Media FIGURE DRAWING & YOGA
Fee: $300 (includes yoga & drawing instruction, 2 buffet breakfasts)

Held on the beautiful Guemes Island (near Anacortes WA), this retreat combines yoga and drawing to strengthen our physical and mental connection within ourselves and our art.  Barbara teaches drawing with yoga instructor Tammie Winter from San Francisco, CA.   

Tammie leads a yoga practice before and after the drawing sessions to energize, balance, and stretch out any tensions.  Barbara guides you through drawing exercises that explore gesture, line, shadow shapes, and movement from a live model.  Charcoal, ink wash and limited soft pastel colors will be used.  On Friday night Tammie begins our retreat with one hour calming and centering yoga.  Saturday morning begins again with one hour of yoga followed by a breakfast buffet.  5 hours of drawing follows afterwards with Barbara.  Yoga ends the day with more stretching, balance and breathing practice for an hour.  A similar schedule follows on Sunday.  There is a one hour lunch break each day and a buffet breakfast both days.  All levels in yoga and drawing are welcomed and accommodated.    Email Barbara soon for assistance with lodging on Guemes Island.
