PAINTING THE FIGURE IN THE LANDSCAPE

in 3 Seattle City Parks

class fee: $360
FRI/SAT/SUN:10am-4pm

This three-day workshop combines the challenge and beauty of Landscape and Figure painting in one class. There is nothing more natural than painting outside and adding a live figure model to the scene is nothing short of exciting!  

Fugate discusses the techniques and concepts of an artist a day, including Manet, Morisot and Gauguin. Painting issues covered include: expressive color,composition, limited color palettes, space and texture.

Each day the class meets at a different Seattle City Park where Fugate introduces painting goals for that day. You begin with a small scale painting sketch followed by a long study on canvas.

This is a great opportunity to explore painting techniques and concepts inspired by a live model posed by open vistas, water views, and towering trees.

Painting experience is recommended.  Oil or Acrylic paints.

What a great way to spend a weekend—Making Art from the live model!

Art Marathons are an excellent opportunity to work at your own pace and experiment with materials.  It's also fun to meet others doing the same thing.  No matter your level, a beginner or very experienced, when the timer starts the pose, we're all in it together.

You can take one or both days. It's an exciting weekend to work from live figure models with a group of fellow artists who are equally focused and enthusiastic about making figurative art.

Pose lengths vary from one-minute gestures to two hour poses.
You can paint, draw, sculpt, make collages—your choice!  I’ll be there, too, making art and timing the models.  No Instruction.

Portrait Painting in the Manner of Max Beckmann
Explore the work and portrait painting techniques of Max Beckmann in this two-day workshop.  Beckmann was a 20th century German painter, printmaker and a teacher who rejected perspective and classical proportion in favor of more expressive and objective art.  His portraits are colorful, with textural brushstrokes and strong black lines that defined the form of the figure.  His concerns for surface texture were inspired by Cezanne and Rembrandt.  You will paint from a live model in the manner of Beckmann, making some short painting sketches and one extended study on canvas.  Some painting experience recommended.  Oil or Acrylic paints.

6 SESSIONS Sketchbook Drawing at the ZOO
Draw in sketchbooks from fascinating animals while exploring issues of color, texture, space, line, form, and composition.  It’s a joy to be outside of the traditional studio investigating drawing concepts
inspired by “models” at the zoo.  Drawing media tools include conté crayon and color washes.  Each lesson begins with a lecture introducing the topic for the day at the zoo café.  Then we travel as a group to draw directly from the animals.  All classes are held at Woodland Park Zoo.  All levels are welcomed.  Zoo entrance fee is not included.

Abstract the Figure 1: Make it Flat & Simplified

Take one or both workshops in January & February which explore ways to make abstract figure paintings inspired by drawings made from life.  First you draw from a live figure model and then paint from your drawings.  Abstract the Figure 1 is inspired by painters such as Matisse, Miro, and Leger who simplified the form of the figure, distilling it to large, flat shapes of brilliant color.  This workshop includes issues of composition, texture, brushwork, and line.  Previous painting and drawing experience is recommended.  Oil or Acrylic paints are welcomed.

Abstract the Figure 2: Show Action & Multiple Dimensions

Take one or both workshops in January & February which explore ways to make abstract figure paintings inspired by drawings made from life.  Abstract the Figure 2 is inspired by Picasso, DeKooning, Francis Bacon and Susan Rothenberg.  These artists made figurative abstract paintings that include action, varied textures and multiple layers.   You will first draw from a live model and then make paintings based on your drawings.  Fast action, expressive brushwork, heavy use of line, and building up and breaking down through several painted layers are the goals of this workshop.  Previous painting and drawing experience is recommended.  Oil or Acrylic paints are welcomed.

Self Portrait Painting the Unusual Way:  In the manner of FRIDA KAHLO 

Study self-portraits by Frida Kahlo in this weekend workshop while painting your own self-portrait in a similar manner.  Kahlo’s self-portraits are biographies, as she surrounds herself with symbolic images representing her life and emotions.  Full of vibrant color and emotional intensity, Kahlo’s paintings resonate with passion for art and life.  Working from mirrors, you will produce one self-portrait along with several painting sketches.  Oil or Acrylic paints. Some painting experience recommended.

Fee:  $235 / Time: 10am - 5 pm Sat/Sun
Exploring the Language of Line: Figure Drawing
Drawing is a visual language.  Every drawing is a construction of lines that have a unique and empathetic voice made in response to each pose.  Fugate will lead you through specific exercises with defined goals focused on using a variety of line, texture, and shapes that “speak” differently.  You will work on short, gesture poses as well as longer more developed studies.  Media include charcoal and ink on paper no smaller than 24X36”.  This workshop aims to explore and expand your visual vocabulary—how it is you make marks, move the figure in space, and respond empathetically to the model and your materials while making lines and shapes.  Some drawing experience recommended.

Sign up for two days of making art from live models with a group of other artists in a focused and enthusiastic atmosphere.  This art marathon offers four poses in all, each for three hours.  There will be 20 minutes of gestures before each long pose to energize and inspire your work.  You can paint, draw, sculpt, create collage—your choice!  I’ll be there drawing and timing the model.  No Instruction.

Painting in the manner of  MODIGLIANI

Amedeo Modigliani (1884–1920) painted his most notable portraits and nudes in Paris, characterized by elongated bodies, textured surfaces, stylized shapes and pure color.  His influences ranged from the classical nude genre, primitive art, and modern artists of his time. This workshop explores the technique, composition and influences of Modigliani.  You will produce one painting made from the life model and several painting sketches.  Oil or Acrylic. Some painting experience recommended.

First zoo drawing day of the new year--year of the snake!

Today was, and still is, mighty sloppy outside!  Rain, dark skies, cold...perfect day to draw inside the reptile house at the zoo!  Here are a few I made...

I mostly worked from the male dwarf crocodile on multiple sheets as one drawing...the last sheet interrupted by the keeper telling me the zoo was closing, so I had to stop.  I did find out from her, though, that the male croc was hatched in 1968, making him 45 (life expectancy is 50-100 years).  The smaller crocodile there is a female of the same age.  She even vocalized a bit while I was drawing--always exciting.  the female is the smaller drawing, showing her eyes closed and "smiling"! 

Maria, the three banded armadillo, was running around as she always does, forever busy!  I managed a quick 10 second'ish gesture before she burrowed underneath a rock.  What a fascinating beauty she is.

And finally, or firstly actually, a head study of a gaboon viper that was eyeing me (head up in the air) the whole time.  I think he/she was hungry...anxious for their keeper to fling in a tasty furry dinner...

Still Life Painting in the Manner of CEZANNE

What is Form?  How is it perceived in space?  This question of Form and how it is perceived was one Paul Cezanne asked over and over again as he painted many still life arrangements using ordinary objects and fruit on a table--such a worthy and complex question using simple everyday objects.  Cezanne’s developments of form, color, and space, led painting from Impressionism into Cubism and his works continue to inspire and challenge us today.  This weekend still life painting workshop investigates “in the manner of Cezanne” how form is perceived by way of color, textural brushwork, and line.  Several short painting studies will be made over the weekend while developing one canvas over both days.  Oil or Acrylic paints.  Some painting experience is recommended.

DRAW LOOSELY with ACCURACY: Proportion & Dynamic Lines

Have you found your gesture drawings to be exciting, loose, and alive while your longer figure studies turn rigid and deliberate?  This weekend workshop is designed to bring your expressive mark-making into long studied figure drawings that also have accurate proportions and structure.  You will use charcoal, colored ink wash and some soft pastel in extended poses and some gestures on 24”x 36” paper.  Issues covered include sight measuring (proportion), line, contour, light and shadow, and depth of space.  All levels welcomed.  Previous drawing experience is recommended.

Drawing is foundational to most all artistic expression, but it is also a final expression in-it-self. The subject of drawing is vast, but I am intrigued with the artist using drawing is a tool of investigation and expression where the artist uses drawing as an organ of discovery both of the physical world and the world of ideas.
