Shi Shi Plein Air: Painting On The WA coast

Just a couple of weeks ago my plein air buddies, Sandra Kahler and Patty Klamser and I packed my van and headed to the Washington coast for 6 nights.  We LOADED our backpacks--painting gear, food, tent, bags, stove...and hauled it out to the beach at Shi Shi.  We camped next to Petroleum creek (great water source!) and only a short walk to Point of Arches--a magnificent collection of seastacks all in a row.

We withstood some weather--wind, rain and fog--painting as much as possible in between the wet stuff.  I managed eight panels in all.  Despite the weather-interruptions, we always have a great time painting out there in nature--sand, bugs, cool temperatures and all.  If art is an experience, dealing with mother nature while working out there should have made our pictures mighty thick and deep in meaning!  (click on images for larger images)

Oregon Plein Air Trek

This summer my great, goofy and gracious plein air buds and I packed up my van and headed to central Oregon to paint.  We ended up at Smith Rock State Park--followed by a full day of painting at Oregon's Painted Hills.  See photos cataloging the trip in my photo album (listed to the right of this screen) titled "OR Plein Air 07".

Current Painting Series-In Progress

Here's a couple of details of a painting I've been working on lately--have another underway, and a third to begin later this week.  These canvases are all a series of works I plan to exhibit during an OPEN STUDIO event happening November 17th & 18th.  My studio will be open to the public, along with many others in my building of artists. More information on that soon.

Plein Air over the Pacific

This past August, known to locals appropriately as "Fogust", I set out for seven days backpack loaded with oils, easel and the necessities for the NW coast.  Joining me on this heavenly week of nothing but plein air painting were four other die-hard artists--all hauling painting AND tenting gear out to Ozette. 

Cape Alava (at Ozette) is the furthest NW corner of the contiguous USA.  It's also a beautiful place on our planet--sea stacks, sea otters, bear, bald eagles, and various other land and water creatures all around.  A great place to paint--fog or not--and it was nothing but fog every day except for one that was perfectly sunny and warm--oh well.  Atmosphere paintings are a good challenge.  And we all ended up liking our "fogust" paintings, the making of them and many of the results, better than the lovely sun lit ones!

Painting at Olana in NY

This is the first of many more landscape paintings I'll make this year.  Painted on Tuesday (4/20/05) at Olana, near Hudson NY.  Olana was Frederic Church's estate (from the Hudson River School painter's group).  Church designed and built his fanciful Persian-influenced studio/estate himself.  The most incredible thing is that the house, its contents AND the view/landscape is pretty much the same as it was when Church was there. 

I faced the same direction as his large studio window does--the building was a great wind-block and this is the best view of the Hudson river vista.
