DYNAMIC FIGURE DRAWING: Gesture and Sustained Gesture Drawing
Class Fee: $225 / Held at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle
Draw the figure with great expression, bold marks, exciting textures, and dynamic energy. This weekend workshop steps you through an approach to drawing from the live model that aims to capture movement, vitality, and structure of the Form. The short length of Gesture poses and speed of our mark-making expands our use of line to tell more with less, to make each mark meaningful, and explore many different types of marks. Issues of gravity, tension, weight, volume, and light will be investigated in both quick Gesture drawings and longer sustained poses as well. We will draw in charcoal and ink wash. All levels welcomed.
October 10 & 11: Sat/Sun, 10 AM – 5 PM, includes a one hour lunch break
MIXED MEDIA FIGURE DRAWING: Texture, Color, Mark-Making
Class Fee: $225/ Held at Youngstown Cultural Arts Center in West Seattle
Pull out all the stops in this Expressive Figure Drawing workshop. Using a multitude of media (including pastel, charcoal, colored ink wash, and collage) we will compose energetic figure drawings that utilize bold Textures, vivid Color, and sensitized Marks (Line). We will make extended studies allowing time to layer materials and create a visual balance. Some quick gesture studies will be made as well to explore ways of making marks that best express how the figure exists in space. Overall, this workshop is about Compositional Balance. Some previous drawing experience is recommended.

Each day we will make two paintings. You may use either oil or acrylic paint. All Levels Welcomed.
Oct 6th - Nov 17th, Tuesdays: 1-4 PM (7 weeks), Class Fee: $195
SKETCHBOOK DRAWING at Woodland Park Zoo & Volunteer Park Conservatory
For seven consecutive Tuesdays we meet at either Woodland Park Zoo or Volunteer Park’s Conservatory to draw in sketchbooks. Working from both animals and plants is a wonderful way to study Form, Movement, Texture, and Composition of shapes, while expanding our mark-making skills. Our “models” at the zoo come in an array of different sizes and shapes keeping us challenged and entertained at the same time. The plants at the Conservatory offer a variety of flora, from delicate orchids to bristly cacti that are equally fascinating subjects. We will draw in sketchbooks with conté crayon and some ink wash. All levels welcomed.
